Koop Nu Uw Gibson In Voorraad
|
Dit artikel verscheen op 16 mei in de "Tennessean", de krant van Tennesee: Gibson electric guitars in short supply BY ANITA WADHWANI THE TENNESSEAN MAY 16, 2010 Guitar retailers soon expect to run out of popular brands of Gibson guitars after the flooding of a company plant that manufactures some of the best-known electric guitars in the nation. The nation's largest musical instrument seller, Guitar Center, anticipates its 214 stores will exhaust their existing stock of Gibson-brand electric guitars "within weeks," according to Phil Rich, vice president of guitar merchandise. Smaller retailers such as the stand-alone 5,000-square-foot Centre City shop in San Diego have already felt the impact. A shipment of six Les Paul electric guitars due last week was canceled, owner Saul Frank said. "The only thing I sell are Gibsons," Frank said. "I sell about two a day. I'm hoping they get back on track soon because, yeah, this is going to start affecting us if they don't." Widespread flooding two weeks ago pushed many of the city's rivers and streams well beyond their banks, including Mill Creek, which flows just behind Gibson USA's sprawling factory complex near Nashville International Airport. The plant churns out 2,500 guitars a day. It is one of several mass production facilities the company operates around the globe including in Memphis; Bozeman, Mont.; and at least five factories in China. Gibson remained mum on the damage figures, despite several requests for interviews. But tweets by CEO Henry Juszkiewicz have chronicled some of the damage to the plant and the company's response. "Nashville USA plant is flooded," he tweeted May 3. Four days later, he tweeted: "small part of plant still underwater," he said. "Insurance will cover, but guitars will be hard to get. Already oversold." On Friday, Juszkiewicz wrote that he expects the plant to be back in full production in July. It is at the flooded Gibson USA plant that the company creates its most popular electric guitars most notably, the solid-body Gibson Les Paul brand the company has manufactured for more than five decades, a guitar prized by amateur and professional rock-and-rollers. The plant also produces Flying V's and Explorer guitars. All three brands manufactured at the flooded factory sell for between $700 and $3,000, retailers said. A Gibson custom-made shop was spared from floods, as well as facilities that manufacture inexpensive Epiphone brands of guitars, according to Juszkiewicz's posts. The lost shipments represent "millions of dollars" in sales, according to Rich, who declined to say how many shipments of the Gibson guitars would be lost. The company is expecting no new shipments for 90 days, Rich said. "At some point over the next few weeks, our stores will begin to run out," Rich said. "As of today, we're in a good inventory position, but those guitars are going to be in short supply." Nashville guitar seller and repairer George Gruhn said the shortage of new Gibsons would mean some customers will have to wait or choose another brand. "The Gibsons are the truly iconic American brand for electric guitars, but it's not like food or fuel," Gruhn said. "Guitar players will do OK." More Gibson articles
